Weight Lifting
A common misconception in exercise is that weight lifting is only for those looking to bulk up, or that it is not important or helpful for women. Neither of these statements are remotely true. Weight lifting is a one of a kind type of workout that can benefit absolutely anyone, from body builders looking to sculpt their bulk, to the average housewife looking to shed a few unwanted pounds. In short, weight lifting can be invaluable for anyone willing to work out.
The reason weight lifting is so important is what it does that other forms of exercise just can't. Weight lifting builds muscle. This doesn't necessarily mean huge, bulky muscle that you see on body builders; it also builds lean, fat-burning muscle. All muscle mass combined is often referred to as lean muscle mass. This is the portion of the body that builds calories at higher rates than fat, increasing natural metabolism. We have all heard of the benefits of having an increased metabolism, both in terms of maintaining weight and athletically, and the only way to increase metabolism is to increase lean muscle mass by weight lifting.
If you are interested in weight lifting, be sure to pick your lifts according to your fitness goals and to start slowly. Weight lifting is a terrific workout that can't be matched through other exercises, but it can be very demanding. Don't start with too much weight or workout too frequently because you can damage your muscles, which will only hamper your weight lifting.
