Russian kettlebells are attributed to Russian athletes, who began using kettlebells to train in the 1700s. Russian and other European athletes continued to perfect their use to train during the Twentieth Century, and today this power and strength training tool is used all over the world. In the U.S., they have been used to work off body fat on television, to train firefighters for the rigors of their jobs and to train professional athletes beyond what they thought was possible with any other system of free weights. Actually, the Russians can't take full credit for developing kettlebells, because Greek athletes used them over 2,000 years ago. But wherever the credit may lie, kettlebells are an excellent tool for the home gym for many reasons.

Russian kettlebells offer a whole body workout. Unlike other free weights, these tools work all the muscles in the body at the same time. There are many different exercises you can do with them, and it is important to learn to use them correctly to prevent injury. Kettlebells also give a cardiovascular workout, which is difficult or impossible to do using most other types of free weights. Adjustable versions allow you to get one single set, rather than having to buy a dozen or more separate weights. DVDs and other video tools are available to help you learn the proper techniques for using them and getting the most out of your workouts. You can loose weight quickly, build muscle and drastically increase your endurance and stamina. The New York City Fire Department began using these valuable weight training tools, as has the U.S. military and many gyms and fitness centers around the U.S. and the world.
