Lifters who use legs and hip weight machines, you'll soon find you have toned, shapelier legs and hips. Many weightlifters spend more time on their upper bodies, than their lower bodies. With legs and hip weight machines, you can tone and strengthen muscles that are often overlooked when it comes to weightlifting.

Many exercise machines focus on the upper body. There are tons of machines and ways to exercise your biceps, triceps, chest, back and other upper body muscles. But for a great physique, incredible strength and whole body fitness, you also need gym equipment for legs. Leg exercises are important because strong legs can protect the muscles of the lower back. Your legs are important in everything you do! Leg presses are a great way to get strong, shapely legs. Whether you are trying to loose fat or build muscle, leg exercises are an important part of a full body workout. In addition to leg presses, you'll also need to include leg curls and exercises for the inner thighs – one of the hardest places to get to with exercise machines. Some leg machines allow you to perform multiple exercises on a single piece of equipment.

Many weight benches offer attachments that help you get good leg exercises. Look for weight benches that come with leg curl and leg extension attachments. Dumbbells and barbells are also great ways to get good leg exercise. Lunges and squats done with weights can strengthen the calfs, thighs, knees, hips and glutes. Lots of home gyms also provide great leg workouts using resistance training, in addition to offering exercises for the upper body, arms, back and abs. Cardio exercise is another important aspect of building strong leg muscles. Invest in a stair stepper, treadmill, elliptical machine, rowing machine or another form of cardio exercise equipment to get the most out of your workout sessions.

Glute and hamstring machines allow you to isolate these lower body muscles. Some machines are designed to isolate the calf muscles during a workout. Whichever type of gym equipment for legs you choose, always stretch the leg muscles thoroughly before beginning the workout. This helps to prevent injury, and some studies indicate you can actually increase your strength by 20 to 30 percent by incorporating stretches into your weight lifting routine. Begin your workout with five minutes of stretching to warm up the muscles. This begins blood flow to the muscles, preparing them for the workout. Stop every three to five sets to stretch the leg muscles thoroughly. After your workout, stretch for an additional five minutes for maximum flexibility and, quite possibly, much more lower body strength.

To learn all the different leg exercises you can incorporate into your workout routine, consider investing in a DVD, poster or another instructional tool. These tools show you the proper way to get the most out of your workout and how to prevent injury during exercise. Injuries can derail your workout routine for weeks, delaying you in getting the results you want. Also critical to achieving your workout goals is a good nutrition plan. Study the proper eating habits for reducing body fat and building healthy, lean muscle. Many fitness enthusiasts also find that nutritional supplements can help them meet their diet and fitness goals.
