In a world obsessed with thinness there may be little support for those trying to gain weight. Gaining weight is a process that requires special attention to health, especially for those recovering from disorders. Any plan on how to gain weight should consider the same standards of health as do those for weight loss. There is more on how to gain weight than just consuming more calories.
How to gain weight has many factors involved and eating more calories is just one. As we have learned from other sources muscle weighs more than fat. In many cases, individuals who are underweight are also underfit, because even those underweight individuals who exercise regularly are unable to achieve fitness. One reason for this is because the development and maintenance of muscle takes huge amounts of energy. If energy is not taken into the body as calories, the body will supply it for itself in the form of muscle tissue. The body will digest and use its own muscle tissue as its source of energy, when none other is available.
It is possible to feed the body more calories than needed and still be underweight. How to gain weight is not a matter of eating as many calories as possible in a given amount of time. Maintaining a healthy weight is about consuming nutrients. When the body receives the proper amounts of nutrition it is able to build in mass. Mass is bone, muscle and fat. There is a certain amount of fat that every body must have to be healthy. For a woman's body this is about 20% to allow the body to produce all the hormones that keeps the female body healthy and beautiful. For a man's body it will be less. However, while a woman's body needs muscle mass a man's body requires more protein to maintain more muscle mass. Both males and females need to maintain strong, dense bones, this also adds to mass or weight.
How to gain weight is highly dependent on nutrition, but exercise is just as vital. It is through exercise that the nutrients provide the energy to build the body mass, as muscle, bones and just the right amount of fat. How to gain weight is not just a factoring of nutrients and calories which equate into some abstract body mass. It is achieving and maintaining the ideal body weight for the individual. The body that is the miracle of life. |
